On a PC, the RBR game window during a session is foreground on the screen and takes precedence over the execution order of processes mounted
in windows that are idle at that time.
This is called the "focus" of the window.
Remember that RBR this is a 32 bit application, and that it is "fragile" at the level of the protection of its "private space".
Switching windows during an RBR session removes the focus from it and gives it to another.

During this time, the RBR game is on stand-by at the "dynamic" level, but does not prevent the time from elapsing.

You may simply run the risk of exceeding the time limit for an ES by doing so.  

If the application you put in focus uses multiple processes that use high CPU priority or high RAM consumption, or involves a process already running
in the background, chances are good that the window manager is running in the background. windows (dwm.exe) cannot restore the focus to the RBR
window as long as the flow of the processes linked to the second window has not been completed.  

This explains the impression of "hang", the impossibility of returning to the focus of the RBR window, and obliges either to allow time to elapse for the
focus to return, with the consequences on your result, or restart the PC with the loss of the RBR session and a disastrous result as well.  

If you want to avoid any interaction that could make you lose your hand on the game window, you should play in full screen instead of windowed mode.

Normally, the Windows window manager (Alt + tab) shows you all the created windows "active" and "inactive" and allows you to choose visually the window which will have the focus.
